Rohit Kansal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, chaired the 4th ESG Taskforce Meeting, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders from government bodies, industry, associations, academia, think tanks, multilateral agencies, and civil society. The meeting focused on advancing a collective vision for a sustainable, circular, and resource-efficient textile and apparel industry in India.
Addressing the gathering, Kansal highlighted that sustainability is not new to India, with traditional practices evident in textile hubs like Tiruppur, Surat, and Panipat. However, he stressed the need to shift “from intent to action and from compliance to competitiveness.”
The Ministry’s long-term vision for the sector was anchored in the “4 Cs”: Collaboration, Cluster-led Change, Common Certification and Capacity Creation.
The discussions emphasized the need for a national framework that blends environmental responsibility with economic opportunity, ensuring India’s global competitiveness while maintaining local relevance.
Kansal expressed appreciation for the valuable insights shared during the session and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to creating a globally recognized model of responsible and sustainable textile production.
